What Life Teaches Us When the Plan Changes

Every now and then, something stops us mid-scroll.

Not because it is loud or overly polished, but because it feels simple, human and true.

We recently came across a post from Richard Branson where he shared some surprising lessons he has learnt in life. You can read his original post HERE

What stayed with us was the honesty behind his reflections. They did not feel like neat leadership principles pulled from a book. They felt lived in, useful and earned through experience.

And perhaps that is why they feel especially relevant right now.

So much of life and leadership is learnt while we are already in motion. Not when the plan is perfect, but when something unexpected happens and we are asked to respond with what we have.

His post touched on a few themes that resonated deeply with us.

One was the idea that meaningful progress often starts with a real problem rather than a perfect idea. Many of the opportunities that shape our lives and careers begin when we notice something that needs improving and choose to do something about it.

Another was the importance of kindness. In a world that often celebrates speed and results, kindness can seem underrated. Yet it is often what builds trust, strengthens relationships and helps people do their best work.

He also reflected on fear and uncertainty. Rather than seeing them only as obstacles, they can sometimes reveal what matters most to us. Difficult moments have a way of bringing clarity, helping us focus on what is truly important.

There was also a reminder that very few people have everything figured out. Even those who appear confident and successful are often learning as they go, making decisions without complete certainty.

And perhaps most importantly, he highlighted the value of staying calm when things do not go to plan. Calmness creates space for better decisions, clearer thinking and stronger leadership, especially during challenging times.

Maybe that is the thread running through all of these reflections.

We do not need life or leadership perfectly figured out. We do not need the flawless idea, the fearless mindset or the loudest voice in the room.

But we do need to stay awake to what life is teaching us.

Stay kind. Stay curious. Notice the problem, not just the plan. Remember that uncertainty is not always a sign we are failing. Sometimes it is a sign we are growing.

Because sometimes the wisdom that changes us most does not come from the plan.

It comes from the detour.
